Victoria is situated South of New South Wales, and East of South Australia.  It has coastal area's facing both the East Coast and South Coast.  Victoria's capital is Melbourne, situated on the Yarra River, which leads into Port Phillip Bay.  Melbourne is a large city, of over 3.5 million people.  It hosted the Olympic Games in 1956 and the Commonwealth Games in 2006.  Melbourne is one of the few cities of the world to have retained it's electric tram network.  It is the home of the iconic Melbourne Cup horse race each year, at Flemington.

The rural area's of Victoria can boast the highest concentration of natural springs and spa's in Australia, as well as some of the earliest gold fields.  It has millions of hectares of parks, national parks, lakes and forests.

Road trips include the Great Ocean Road, starting at Geelong, the second largest City in Victoria. It travels along the rugged South West Coast, past places of interest such as the twelve apostles.

From Melbourne you can go on to South Australia, across to Tasmania or up to Sydney.

TIPS:

Water, where available as town water, in Australia, is generally potable (drinkable) unless cautions are displayed.  In the inland parts of Australia some town water may be bore water or artesian water.  Not all of this is recommended for drinking.  In some cases the water may have a different taste or smell, and is an acquired taste.  In some smaller towns of inland or central Australia the water comes out of the taps at scalding temperatures (artesian bore water).  Of interest this water comes out of the ground under pressure, and may not need to be pumped.

Supermarkets, shops, service stations and licensed premises (bars/clubs/hotels/motels) sell bottled water.

Electricity in Australia - Electricity from mains supply power points in Australia is alternating current (AC) which is usually specified as being supplied at 230 to 240 volts with a frequency of 50 Hz. Officially, mains supply voltage is 230 volts with a tolerance range of +10% and -6% (i.e. 216 to 253 volts).  It is commonly referred to as 240V, 10 amp outlet.

It has become common for modern buildings to have circuit breakers, rather than the older wire fuses, which has increased the protection of people when using power in Australia.

For industrial use we also have three phase power (different outlet), and 240V 15amp outlets (heavy duty power points), although these are not generally found in tourist resorts!!.

Tourist resorts from backpackers hostels to luxury accommodation are also fitted with smoke alarms.  Within Australia it is forbidden to smoke on an aircraft, generally.

And a footnote: People in Australia drive on the left side of the road.  Boats pass to the right of each other.
